It started with a problem nobody was solving

In 2021, open water swimming races across Aruba and Curacao were scored by hand -- clipboards, squinted eyes at the finish line, and results that took hours to compile. Timing was imprecise. Disputes were common. And organizers were burning out.

timing.events began as a personal mission: support the local sports community while learning a new technology. The idea was simple -- bring RFID chip timing, GoPro cameras, and ALGE professional finish-line cameras to open water races, so every swimmer could trust their result. No more guesswork. No more arguments at the finish line.

From one beach to 85+ races across the Caribbean

What started with a single open water race at California Lighthouse quickly grew. Mountain bikers heard about the system. Then windsurfers. Then triathletes. The Karcher Duo Xtreme series, the Aruba Hi-Winds, MTB championships, CARIFTA Open Water -- one by one, organizers came knocking.

Over five years, timing.events has timed more than 85 races across Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, Trinidad and Tobago, and even Florida. Along the way, the number of mountain bike and open water events in Aruba didn't just grow -- it exploded. New clubs formed, new athletes showed up, new races appeared on the calendar. When scoring is easy and results are instant, people want to race more.

From timing races to shaping the sport

The work with timing.events opened doors far beyond the islands. Today, the expertise built through thousands of finish-line reads, camera angles, and split-time configurations has led to roles on the Open Water Committee of both Panam Aquatics and World Aquatics -- helping shape how the sport is organized and officiated at the international level.

That journey -- from a local volunteer with an RFID reader on a beach to helping govern open water swimming worldwide -- is proof that good technology, applied with passion, can change a sport from the ground up.

Why timing.events is now a service

For years, this was a labor of love. Every race timed at cost, every system upgrade paid out of pocket, every weekend volunteered. But after 85+ races, the truth is clear: doing this right costs real money. GoPro cameras wear out. ALGE finish cameras need calibration and maintenance. RFID readers need replacing. Software needs development. And the demand keeps growing.

Making timing.events a professional service isn't about walking away from the community that built it -- it's the only way to keep investing in better technology, more reliable equipment, and a platform that serves organizers across the Caribbean and beyond. Every dollar goes back into making race timing better for everyone.

The mission hasn't changed. The finish line just got an upgrade.
